57. Champagne, Your Career, and the Holiday Party

My list of holiday party guidelines has been published by many news organizations, for one practical reason: the suggestions encourage employees to enjoy holiday celebrations without making career-damaging mistakes.

Here are my seven guidelines for office party success:

1. Remember to RSVP. Let people know that you will attend. And if you cannot go, provide a very good reason. The party is a business activity, and you are expected to participate. Also, arrive on time.

2. Dress appropriately. It may be a celebration, but your attire needs to be suitable for a business social event, not a nightclub.
