Business lunches provide opportunities for colleagues to get to know each other outside the traditional office setting.

I once had a boss who would take a different employee to lunch every month, so he could get to know his staff in a more informal setting.

Business lunches also can mend fences. Years ago, after I had experienced a particularly difficult encounter with a colleague, my mentor told me, “When the going gets tough with someone, take the person to lunch.” She was right. I asked the man to lunch, and as a result, we were able to work through our differences outside of the corporate environment.
