19. Love Me . . . Love Me Not! Office Romance Restrictions

Given the amount of time Americans spend at work, it’s probably inevitable that some office relationships will develop into office romances.

But romance at work can be costly. Even CEOs aren’t immune to the fallout from romantic entanglements at work. Consider a handful of headline-making resignations in recent years:

• Stryker Chief Executive Stephen P. MacMillan resigned in early 2012 following questions about his relationship with a former flight attendant for the company’s corporate jets.

• Best Buy’s former chief executive Brian Dunn resigned in 2012 after allegations that a personal relationship with a 29-year-old subordinate “negatively impacted the work environment.”
