13. Help! I’m in a Conversation and I Can’t Get Out!

I tried to get out of a conversation by excusing myself and saying that I was going to the restroom. It didn’t work. She followed me into the ladies’ room!

Getting out of a conversation can be the hardest part, as that funny-but-true anecdote from a bookstore manager attests. Numerous people in my seminars tell me this. Some people will not get into a conversation because they don’t know how to get out of a conversation. But it is possible to disengage, and it helps to remember these two things:

1. You need to have an exit line ready that clearly signals the end of the conversation, such as “Nice to meet you” or “Nice talking to you” or “See you next week at the meeting.”
