42. REMOVE ALL BARRIERS

Building a relationship in person is hard enough; try doing it during a time-allotted interview over the Web. In order to bond quickly with the person conducting the interview, you need to have a direct visual line to him/her. This means having nothing in front of you that would block the hiring manager’s view of you. There shouldn’t be any objects between you and the person on the other end of the camera. Your keyboard should not be in front of you; put aside your paper clip bowl and your rubber-band ball. Likewise, your microphone should be placed to the side. There should be nothing but a clear, unobstructed view of you and the hiring manager.
