39. TIME ZONE

Where is the hiring party calling you from? Is he/she in a different state? A different country? The key question is really this: Is the hiring manager calling you from the same time zone? This is important to know so you can address the other person with the correct greeting—it might be 7 a.m. your time but 8 p.m. her time, in which case you need to say “Good evening” and not “Good morning.” You need to be in sync with the hiring manager in terms of the time of day. Think about your background, too. Don’t have your video camera focused outside your window with the sunshine pouring in when it’s 8 o’clock at night for the other person.
