The term angel originated in the 1920s in Los Angeles when high net individuals came up with the money to produce the first Hollywood films. Hollywood folks referred to these early investors as angels, just as theater folks do.

Someone that invests as a high-net-worth individual into an early stage company is an angel. Some people say business angels. I just say angels. Today there are more angel investors than ever before and most venture capitalists have moved along the continuum away from early-stage seed investing into raw startups and farther along toward later stage and in many cases private equity investing.
