GETTING DEEPER: SLEEP PSYCHOLOGY

The following sleep study demonstrates the psychological aspect of sleep. In this sleep study, subjects from similar backgrounds were divided into three groups. They were removed from anything that they could use to check the time or that would give them any indication of how much time had passed, including clocks, light and temperature change.

The first group was told that they would sleep for eight hours. The second group was informed that they would be sleep-deprived and only allowed to sleep for six hours. The third group was told that they would sleep for 10 hours. The group that only slept for six hours complained of sleepiness, irritability and impaired concentration.
