A BRIEF HISTORY OF STRESS

Stress occurs when the brain’s survival response mechanism takes over. As human beings we are naturally wired for survival, this has been in our makeup for millennia; your survival instinct is hard-wired into your brain.

When you are stressed the ‘fight-or-flight’ part of your brain signals danger. Even though we no longer live in the wild, we are automatically programmed to run from a deadly lion or rampaging herd of wild bulls. This is just as well, as we still need this reflex. If we needed to decide each time whether we should run or fight (as would be the case if the higher brain functions were in control), we would lose valuable seconds.
