Knowing the Employee’s Excuse

Knowing the employee’s excuse also plays a valuable role in determining discipline. You should ask the following questions:

  1. Is the excuse worthless?

  2. Is the excuse a reason for moderating what would otherwise be the penalty?

  3. Is there no excuse?

  4. Did the employee show or fail to show remorse?

  5. Was the employee dishonest or disingenuous in his excuse?

Any number of these things can be cited when you state the reason for your ultimate decision. At the very least, this kind of investigation shows that you investigated the events and considered the employee’s defense before you took adverse action.
