Edwards had been the vice presidential candidate in the 2004 election and was considered a serious possibility for the top slot in 2008. He garnered enough early support to launch a campaign and had raised nearly $44 million in contributions by the end of 2007; however, after repeated poor showings in the initial presidential primaries, he suspended his campaign on January 30, 2008.
