Chapter 6. Post-Release Defect Removal

Introduction

Because software defect removal efficiency averages only about 85% and essentially never equals 100%, there will always be latent defects present in software at the time of delivery. IBM called these defects in delivered software latent defects because until the software is released, these defects have yet to manifest as problems experienced by users.

Some of these latent defects were discovered during testing but were not repaired by the time the software was released. Other defects were not discovered and were unknown to the developers and test personnel at the time of release.

Still other defects will be in the form of “bad fixes” or new defects accidentally included in prior defect repairs. ...
