The afternoon was getting pretty dark. It had been raining heavily all day. In fact it had been raining hard for days. At times it seemed the downpour was more suited to the tropics than to North Yorkshire, such was its occasional ferocity. I had witnessed a wall of rain like this once before, but what we were all watching was not in Florida or Bali, or any other exotic location; it was in the gateway to the Dales.
