Bringing a smartphone to market isn’t trivial, and making it a commercial success is even harder. It takes a special combination of software, hardware, carriers, and willing consumers to turn a smartphone into a commercial success.
In this chapter, I explore one of the critical links in that chain: the Android operating system. Google has developed an amazing portfolio of free Web applications (like Gmail and Google Docs), so it only makes sense that it would bring that experience to smartphones.
I explore all the major areas of Android, including the home screen, status bar, and notifications, and round out the chapter with apps and widgets. Knowing the basic building blocks will help you get the most out of your Droid.
