You head over to the break room for your usual morning coffee. Patrick and Jason are leaving just as you arrive.

Patrick walks over and asks to have a word with you alone.

“Jason’s very upset by your presence,” says Patrick.

You aren’t surprised to hear this, but nonetheless you feel bad that you have caused Jason discomfort. Being an effective coach is about being sensitive to others without being overemotional.

You take a deep breath and then reply, “I’m prepared to be flexible. I can adapt the way I work based on Jason’s feedback.”

Patrick says Jason’s response is nothing personal. He’s reacted like this on a number of occasions with different people who’ve tried to help the team in the past.
