IN THE PSYCHOANALYTIC history of dreams, symbols have become cheap currency. It was relatively easy for analysts to pile on symbol translations. As Freud (1900) revised The Interpretation of Dreams, the section on symbols was added. It eventually ballooned in size more than any other, as analysts pitched in and started identifying symbols. The process of expanding the chapter got so out of hand that eventually a whole section became repeated in the text on “Typical Dreams” (Freud, 1900, pp. 271 and 393).
