Participation Rubric
Leaders and facilitators typically want good participation in the discussions they convene, but most people assume that participating means talking a lot and sounding smart. When this norm is internalized and unchallenged then the loudest and most confident dominate.
We use versions of the following rubric to interrupt this norm and signal what we mean by good participation. You'll note that none of the behaviors are of the talk-a-lot-and-sound-smart variety.
Purposes
- To provide a set of specific behaviors that count as good participation
- To interrupt the expectation that participation is equivalent to talking a lot
- To emphasize that good discussion depends on careful listening and responding
