Index

Note

In this ePub3-format hypertext ebook, the index is an organizing system that presents an alphabetical arrangement of terms to enable lookup and discovery of corresponding subject matter, selectable with hypertext links designed to lead the reader to a term’s first use, its definition or a featured mention within the content.

When an index term’s referent is a paragraph or phrase located within the main flow of text, the number and title of its parent section are offered as the link anchor text. When an index term’s referent is a section, sidebar, figure, table, or example, then its label is offered as the link anchor text. When an index term’s referent is a footnote, then a footnote call marker is offered as the link anchor text.

Due to variation in aesthetic factors such as font size and multi-column layout, and engineering factors such as interpretation and implementation of standards, it is impossible to predict whether or how ebook readers will implement the hypertext links that we intended to present to you.

Our intent is for this Index to be a useful discovery interface. We experience inconsistent behaviour among readers we have tried. If your software interface frustrates our humble efforts, we apologize for your discomfort.—MM
