Introduction

The phenomenon of digital storytelling (DS) has attracted a great deal of critical and academic scrutiny in recent years. Knut Lundby (2008) and John Hartley and Kelly McWilliam (2009) and their contributors, as well as David Gauntlett (2011) and Bryan Alexander (2011) all share insights into the particular and more general outworking of the idea of digital story as a coherent contemporary phenomenon. This chapter explores DS not just as a current technological activity but as part of a creative practice that has a history as long and complicated as language itself.
