Now that you have an idea of what the controls do and when to use them, let’s revisit the style categories described at the beginning. Here are some tips for those photographic situations.

Portraits

The automatic portrait mode cannot compensate for the one thing that really enables you to make classic portraits with out-of-focus backgrounds: a “fast” telephoto lens. You need a telephoto lens with a big maximum aperture (f-stop number f/4 or lower) to really create portraits of people and objects that have a really pleasing, out-of-focus background.
