The Black & White command was introduced with Photoshop CS3 and has certain advantages over the Channel Mixer. The command is also available in almost identical form in Adobe Camera Raw (4.x and higher) and in Lightroom.
Our source image (Figure 10-22) is not particularly colorful, but it could be a good monochrome subject. Applying the Black & White adjustment layer with its default settings (Figure 10-23) gave us the result in Figure 10-24.
