Assignment: Take Your Own Plate From Day to Night

Try out these techniques using an image of your own choosing, or for an extra challenge, use a photograph you took yourself.

Starting with a daytime photograph, do the following:

1. Duplicate your original image so you are working over a copy.

2. Add a one-inch black border around the image to give yourself a work area.

3. Patch over, or paint out any cast shadows that are apparent in the photo, since nighttime scenes usually will not show hard cast shadows.

4. Create re-usable mask-loading layers for the rooftops, building sides, and any architectural elements in your scene that require relighting.
