The Top Painting Layer

Many matte artists add a final layer at this point on which to make any last-minute corrections. This final layer sits above all the others. Let’s add such a layer now, and call it TopPainting. You can paint directly on this layer instead of returning to the lower layers of the project. If you try to work on a layer below CastleBlueMultiply or OrangeOverlay, you’ll find it difficult because those layers have a powerful effect on the underlying pixels. A top paint layer is where you can tweak any layer requiring work and bring the entire composition up to your standards of finish.

The final castle should resemble Figure 7-72.
