How it all began
I’ve got one of the great jobs.
My work takes me to Europe, Asia and the Americas. I’ve never
shaken off my teenage travel bug, so I accept offers from anywhere
– Wall Street, Hong Kong, Cairo – as long as a business class ight
is part of the deal. I love the role, love talking in front of people,
love that moment when the penny drops and they understand.
But a chance meeting with the investment director of a secretive
private bank changed my life for ever. Guy Abercrombie had
been one of my students and now he was an immensely rich
man. How had he become so successful so quickly? What was the
knowledge he had and others didn’t? He promised to tell me, and
that’s when my problems began.
If you’ve ever been intrigued about how bankers make money,
then this is the book for you. It will explain the secret techniques
and cunning schemes of the money men. It’ll tell you more than
you ever wanted to know. While writing this book I’ve contin-
ually asked myself this question: how would you benet from
learning what my mysterious client knew?
I’ve written The Devil’s Deal with two audiences in mind. I want
new visitors to this strange world to understand why we lurch
from one nancial crisis to another. If you’ve ever been intrigued
by the secret techniques and cunning schemes of the money
men, then this is the book for you. Use it as a guidebook to
nance, with translations of the most common phrases included
for free. Readers already working in banking will enjoy how the
truth about the nancial world is revealed. You’ll recognise some
of the characters around your ofce: you might even recognise
yourself.
One-way ticket2
I’ve had to change the names of certain characters and rms to
avoid even more letters from lawyers. And, in two very important
instances, I’ve been advised to change the location for reasons
of personal safety. The people involved are unlikely to complain
about being made anonymous.
The Devil’s Deal is the ultimate insider’s tale. The Devil’s Deal is
also a thriller. And it’s true.
