Sack early

I’m a fan of employment regulations. They force you to think twice about getting rid of a member of staff. Just because you’ve suddenly taken against a colleague, or ‘their face doesn’t fit’, it forces you to stop being capricious and sit down to address the real problem.

But there is an exception. Despite all the processes in the world, sometimes you just make a bad hire. Even if you’ve had a couple of interviews, there is only so much you can glean in two short hours. And to retread the cliché, ‘It’s not you, it’s me’, chances are it is no one’s fault. They’re just not quite the fit you thought they’d be for the role.

In this case, you have to act decisively and ask them to quit.
