Sometimes the greatest block to creativity is how much you already know.

One of the most powerful drivers of human nature is habit. There is a strong evolutionary bias for this, as Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit, observes: ‘Left to its own devices, the brain will try to make almost any repeated behaviour into a habit, because habits allow our minds to conserve effort.’

Given the complexity of the modern world, our brains are hardwired to impose familiar patterns on unfamiliar solutions. It’s a great approach if you’re surviving in the wild. Less useful if you’re trying to invent a new production process.
