Action points

  • Think twice before formalising penalties and rewards for good and bad behaviour. Not only do you risk people ‘gaming’ the system, you remove the most painful sanction.
  • Look instead for the equivalent of a ‘naughty step’. OK, you might not go as far as the company that made trainees wear a cabbage on their heads, but the simple act of listing someone’s name in the weekly meeting minutes can have a far more powerful effect.
