When I started this project, I felt as if I were walking out onto a limb by myself. By the end I found that there were hundreds of people out there with me, and the limb had grown sturdy enough to support us all. While I can’t begin to thank everyone, I’d like to call out a few dozen people who had a special influence on the book.

Let me begin with Paul Rand, perhaps the greatest print communicator of the 20th century. Before his death, more than a decade ago, he challenged me to champion the role of aesthetics in business.
