Virtual hosts provide a way to run more than one website on the same physical server machine, on the same installation of Apache. Apache has provided this functionality since version 1.0.

There are two types of virtual hosts: IP-based virtual hosts, where each virtual host requires its own IP address, and name-based virtual hosts, where multiple virtual hosts can coexist on the same IP address by virtue of having different hostnames. In this chapter, we will concern ourselves exclusively with name-based virtual hosts.
