National Insurance and state benefits

Employed or self-employed, you must pay National Insurance contributions as well as Income Tax on your earnings or business profits. By paying sufficient National Insurance contributions you become eligible to claim those social security benefits that are based on your contribution history. Many benefits, mainly those payable to the disabled, do not depend upon the payment of contributions.

National Insurance numbers

You need to have a National Insurance number (NINO) so that all the contributions you make can be properly recorded. It is unique to you and made up of two letters and six numbers, followed by a further letter – A, B, C or D. You keep the same number for your whole life.
