WHERE THE CROWDS AREN’T

A unique opportunity can arise at any time. I was assigned to get some images of the ocean in Manhattan Beach, California, after a sewage spill. On the other side of the “Do Not Enter the Water” sign, a rare opportunity existed—a deserted Southern California beach.

After capturing the necessary water shots, I started playing around with different lenses, trying to capture empty beach views, which did not convey the beach contamination but instead looked surreal without thousands of beach goers wading in the surf. —TH
