Would you believe me if I told you that someone walked out of the Louvre—right out the front door—with da Vinci’s Mona Lisa under his coat?

 

Fantastic as this may seem, that’s exactly what happened on August 21, 1911. An Italian employee of the Louvre, believing in his heart that da Vinci’s masterpiece belonged in Italy, hid in a closet until the museum was closed to the public, and took the painting right off the wall and out the door.
