The Italian city on water hosted the first art Biennale in 1895, which included artists from 16 nations. Founded as the “International Exhibition of Art of the City of Venice” to promote “the noblest activities of the modern spirit without distinction of country,” the exhibition became known as the Biennale, for its schedule of festivities devoted to art occurred every two years.
