Biennial, or biennale in Italian, refers to a festival occurring every two years for a few months in places around the world such as Venice, Berlin, Taipei, Istanbul, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, and Sydney. It has come to mean a festival that showcases advances in contemporary visual art. Funded through a mix of public (government) and private (individual) money, the oldest biennial began in Venice, Italy, in 1895.
