Colorful, gripping, and psychologically expressive, Kahlo’s art was a cathartic means for her to express her deep emotional anguish over the traumatic events that shaped her life. Among them, a childhood attack of disabling polio, a tragic accident that left her in lifelong pain and affected her ability to have children, and a distressing relationship with husband and fellow artist Diego Rivera.
