The creation of Black Mountain College in 1933 occurred during a time when the world was at war, suffering a global economic depression. The progressive liberal arts school nestled in the mountains of North Carolina began recruiting European artists and intellectuals including Joseph Albers, the first art teacher at Black Mountain.
