Raphael (1483-1520)

ARTISTIC TRANSCENDENCE

“While we may term other works paintings, those of Raphael are living things...” —Giorgio Vasari in Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, c. 1550.

 

Although the Italian Renaissance saw no shortage of magnificent art, one cannot fully appreciate the period without reflecting on the impeccable work of Raphael. Raffaello Santi was born in Urbino, Italy, on Good Friday. His father, an artist of average talent, taught his son the rudiments of art. Later Raphael apprenticed with Pietro Perugino, under whose guidance his talent flourished.
