REVIVING THE PURITY OF THE PAST

 

In an effort to renew the purity and drama of painting before the time of Raphael, a group calling themselves the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood formed in mid-19th-century England with an eye for romance, beauty, and detail. Two of the young founding members were colleagues at the Royal Academy in London. They despised the strict conventions enforced by the Academy and reacted to what they saw as the downfall of art from the time of Mannerism on.
