Contrast in art is easy to spot but challenging to define. Essentially, contrast in a work of art is a dynamic of dissimilarity within elements. It is a tool of many tricks; it can add depth, increase drama, emphasize, and clarify. Whether it’s rooted in a difference in value, color, shape, line, or texture, an area of high contrast stands apart visually and attracts the eye. Below we’ll touch on a few ways contrast can occur.
