FAKING IT

Most Americans do not know that we almost went to war again against the North Koreans from 1977 to 1978. Kim Jong-il was North Korea’s leader. Not only had he threatened to nuke the United States several times, but the North Koreans had recently shot down one of our helicopters. Tragically, they ambushed and killed a U.S. lieutenant in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between North Korea and South Korea.

My first assignment after military intelligence school was as a second lieutenant in South Korea in 1977. I flew into Seoul, where I was housed overnight. The next day, wearing my Class A uniform (green jacket with skirt—women’s Class As did not come with slacks at that time), I went to an airfield where a helicopter was awaiting me. ...
