Summary

The data foundation provides information about the underlying physical structure for your universe. Joins are an important element of the data foundation, because they allow data from different tables to be used together. Contexts help group related tables and join statements together. Aliases allow the same physical table to be used in different ways and in multiple joins to the same fact table.

While users may never see joins, if the universe designer makes mistakes in the joins and related settings, then objects may not work with one another—or worse, they give users incorrect results. To define joins correctly, keep in mind the following guidelines:

• Define joins based on the actual data and not just the logical business model.
