38 Be Open to New Ideas

Leaders are often beset by twin demons—arrogance and complacency. Arrogant leaders believe their ideas are superior to everyone else’s. Complacent leaders are simply unwilling to listen to others’ ideas and experiment with them. They are content with the status quo.

Perhaps these leaders feel threatened by good ideas coming from others. Maybe they lack the energy to make changes. Maybe they grew up with the mistaken notion that those with the formal title of “manager” should have the answers to all problems.

This lack of openness to new or different ideas is the third fatal flaw. It can be a major turnoff to subordinates. Insisting on doing things the same old way can have two major negative consequences.
