I realize that a lot of terms and numbers in this balance sheet may be new to you. You’ve probably heard the old joke, “How do you eat an elephant?” Answer: “One bite at a time.” So we are going to take these accounts line by line, a bite at a time.
 
Note that although our sample balance sheet and the following list are not exhaustive, they do present the assets commonly found on the balance sheet of a commercial or industrial company, such as a retailer or manufacturer.
