The Prisoner’s Dilemma

Even if you have never personally been involved in the criminal justice system, I suspect you may have watched some television dramas in which a serious crime has been committed, and a couple of bad guys are caught and interrogated separately by law enforcement officers. The usual drill is that the police do not have enough evidence to convict one (or both) of the suspects, but in the separate interrogations they try to get the suspects to turn on each other.
If the suspects both keep mum, the police will only be able to convict them of a minor offense with relatively little prison time. But the interrogators are often able to get the individual suspects to plead to the crime by persuading each one that his accomplice ...
