Government: The Enemy?
Although it’s fashionable to knock the government, the U.S. economy wouldn’t be the powerhouse that it is without it. Aside from the government’s share of GDP, economic policies have clearly contributed to the stability and growth of the U.S. economy.
Moreover, in a democracy, people get the government they vote for. Thus, if the government appears to be at odds with itself, perhaps society is at odds with itself. If elected officials won’t discuss economic realities honestly, perhaps voters have given them no incentive to do so. Fortunately, the U.S. economy appears to be sound enough to absorb these imperfections and still provide one of the highest standards of living in the world.
