Staying Above the Fold

In Chapter 10, we talked about how to write a cover e-mail that introduces a resume. By keeping your e-mail message brief, the resume that you paste into the body of the e-mail will appear above the fold—that is, the reader can see it without having to scroll down his e-mail window. Having the resume within easy sight immediately tells her what your e-mail’s about.

Give yourself the three-word test when it comes to writing a good subject line for your e-mail. Because most e-mail systems show only a few words of a subject line, make the first three words of your subject line strong enough to make the employer open your e-mail.
