Get Out of the Backseat and Take the Wheel
So far, we have looked at two dimensions of the interview: as performance and as an interaction.
Now for the third dimension: The interview as a sale, in which you subtly take control in order to guide the interviewer into making the decision to offer you a position.
Your best chance for success is to understand and use all three dimensions of the interview to your advantage. Climb out of the backseat, take the wheel, and steer.
Follow That Lead
Steering, however, means nothing unless you have a destination. Go from being a stranger to the interviewer to becoming somebody the interviewer’s organization has “gotta have.”
