USING PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES TO CREATE LINOLEUM AND RUBBER BLOCK PRINTS

Linoleum blocks are a great tool for creating multiple prints of an image. Linoleum sheets, mounted on a background block or unmounted, can be purchased in various sizes. A newer variety of eraserlike rubber blocks are available as well. Like linoleum, they can be carved and used for printing, and they are even a bit easier to cut than linoleum. The printed results from either material are quite similar.

Typically, you carve out the negative space of an image, using linoleum-cutting tools, such as a v-gouge or a u-gouge. After carving, you roll ink over the top and print from the uncarved areas, which constitute the image.
