ALTERING 35MM PHOTOGRAPHY

SANDPAPER AND MARK MAKING

Sometimes, the best results can be achieved with the simplest of materials. An image that is worn or distressed tells a story, as if the image has its own personal history.

To distress a photograph, dip it into a pan of lukewarm water just long enough to wet the entire photograph (about 30 seconds), and then remove it. Place the image on a flat surface, and, using fine-grit sandpaper, begin to sand away the edges of the image into the emulsion. If you would like to remove specific areas of the photograph, gently sand them away while the photo is still damp.
