Build a Valuable Network

Having a network is different from networking. Networking has a bad reputation, and that’s primarily because most people don’t do it well. No executive at a high level does anything called networking. So it’s vital to set aside the idea of networking as an activity and start focusing on building the critical business asset that is your network. Building a strong and valuable network requires constant effort and attention and is an ongoing process—it’s never done. “Networking” is a vague, often pointless activity; “building your network” is more concrete. Start early and consider the time invested in building your network as having lifelong value.
